Woodbury, CT – On Sunday October 5th at 11:00 am, Schwenke/Woodbury Auction presents its Annual Fall Fine Estates Auction with a strong offering of over 400 lots featuring estate property from one of the founding families of the Village of Centre Island, Oyster Bay, New York; a prominent Upper East Side NYC estate; estates in Glen Cove, New York and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; and New Milford, Woodbury and Southbury, Connecticut. The sale includes American, English and Continental furniture and decorative arts, English & other sterling silver, fine art, bronzes and other decorative arts, Asian arts and oriental rugs.

This sale is being held in the firm’s main auction room at 710 Main Street South, Middle Quarter Plaza, in Woodbury. Preview times are Friday, October 3 - 11am to 5pm, Saturday, October 4 - 11am to 5pm, Sunday, October 5 - 9am to sale time, and other times by appointment. Preview is also available from 8:00 am on the day of sale.

Among the furniture highlights of the auction are a rare pair of English Regency satinwood and mahogany library bookcases, 19th century, each case with central jasperware figural frieze at top flanked by two figural cameos amid painted ribbon and swag decoration, vertical stiles with gilt metal floral and tassel mounts, two inlaid shelves in interior, top and bottom horizontal stiles having floral and gilt metal banded decoration on rectangular bases. 39 1/4" high, 54" wide, 16 3/4" deep.

Furniture from the Centre Island estate includes an important George III eglomise and inlaid mahogany bookcase cabinet, with diamond mullioned glass doors and black and gilt eglomise diamond shaped inset panels, above a base with two inset paneled doors with oval string inlays and set on french feet with a shaped apron. England, early 19th century. 96” high, 48” wide, 22” deep. Other furniture includes dining tables, sets of chairs, sideboards and servers and several chest of drawers and occasional tables, a Pennsylvania tall chest, a Connecticut cherrywood ogee foot chest, and a Boston mahogany commode.

Fine mirrors are also on offer, including a classically inspired Regency convex mirror, England early 19th century, with an ebonized eagle mount with gilt ball suspension over a convex mirror bordered by gilded spherules and having carved and gilded ornamentation below. 45" high, 25 1/4" wide. The Long Island estate yielded a very fine and rare Continental neo-classical gilt & gesso bilbao mirror with faux marble mountings and with central urn and floral spray, engaged half columns at the sides and scrolling vines at the base, European, early 19th century, 54” high by 22” wide.

Fine folk art is also represented, including a rare Copper full bodied owl weathervane with two owls perched on a branch, circa 1930, in apparently original gold leaf with cast iron directional. Vane: 21 1/2" high, 33 1/2" long, 1" deep.

Fine art lots include a very fine work by John Cordrey (English, 1765-1825), "Coaching Scene", oil on canvas laid down on board, unsigned, with sales receipt from Tillou Gallery, Litchfield, CT, circa 1980's. Provenance: Duke of Portland collection. Sight size: 20 1/2" high, 28 1/2" wide. Another fine art lot is a fine small oil on canvas by James Gale Tyler (CT 1855-1931), "Sailboat on Open Sea", signed lower left “JG Tyler”. Sight size: 9 3/4" high, 8" wide, frame size: 17 1/4" high, 15 1/2" wide. Several other marine works are offered, including a work by Tomaso De Simone (Italian, active 1870-1900), “An Admiralty Schooner of the White Squadron in the Bay of Naples” oil on canvas, signed, dated lower right “T D Simone 1869”. One of a famous family of Neapolitan ship portraitists, Tomaso painted primarily in the Bay of Naples, often including Mount Vesuvius, and his work is often of British vessels. Exhibited: National Maritime Museum, London. Sight size: 19" high, 28" wide. Frame size: 27" high, 36" wide.

Silver lots to be sold include a fine Tiffany & Co. sterling silver oval handled presentation tray, engraved 'to Leroy A. Van Bomel....' dated 1948, measuring 17 5/8" high by 28 1/2" wide with weight of 124.8 troy ounces. There are many other sterling silver items, including several flatware sets, and other fine sterling including other Tiffany & Co. items.

Several bronzes are also featured, including a work by Eugeny Lanceray, (Russia1848-1886) of a Zaporozhsky Kazak on horseback after a battle with a Turkish trophy horse, signed top of base "Lanceray" 18" high, 21" wide.

The sale also includes over fifty estate oriental carpets including Persian and Caucasian room and scatter sized rugs, and other regional Asian rugs of varying sizes.
