Woodbury Auction Establishes "The Expert Eye" Decorative Arts Forum

Woodbury Auction LLC has announced the establishment of a decorative arts analysis series titled "The Expert Eye". The inaugural event will take place on Saturday, April 30th from 2-4 pm when Philip Zimmerman, noted museum and decorative arts consultant and former head of the museum collections division at Winterthur Museum will illustrate how an "expert" examines furniture items prior to purchase. Three pieces of American furniture will be examined during the program, each already consigned to Woodbury Auction’s Second Anniversary Antique and Fine Art Auction being held on Saturday, May 21st.

The items include an inlaid mahogany Chippendale secretary from Virginia or South Carolina, a Pennsylvania walnut Queen Anne dressing table, and a Lancaster County Chippendale cherry desk. Consignors/owners of the secretary and lowboy, both from Connecticut, will be attendance to participate in the analysis and dialogue. The Lancaster desk was consigned by an owner in San Francisco, California and will be arriving at Woodbury Auction in late April, just in time for the event. The owner will not be in attendance due to the distance involved

Thomas Schwenke, the founder of Woodbury Auction, commented that "the purpose of the program is to establish Woodbury Auction’s mission as an auction house committed to scholarship and education in offering items for sale through the public auction process." He added "Phil Zimmerman is a highly qualified expert with broad experience and we are delighted that he is able to participate in the launch of this educational program."

The event is being held at the Woodbury Town Library in central Woodbury. Registration is limited so those interested in attending are advised to register early. The registration fee is $25 per person. All proceeds to benefit the The Glebe House Museum & Gertrude Jekyll Garden in Woodbury. The $25 registration fee also includes a museum tour at 4:00 on Saturday, April 30th, or anytime on Sunday, May 1st from 1-4 pm.
