Woodbury Auction to Feature Fine and Decorative Arts in Sunday, February 26th Multiple Estate Auction

Posted February 10, 2012
Woodbury, CT – Woodbury Auction’s upcoming estate auction is being held at noon on Sunday, February 26th. This sale features over 365 lots of market fresh fine and decorative arts from multiple estates and collections, including estates in California, Florida, Illinois, New York and Connecticut. Principal categories include period American, English and Continental furniture, fine and decorative arts, Tiffany and other sterling silver, a selection of jewelry, selected European decorations, American country furniture and folk art, and oriental carpets.

This auction is the third sale to be held in the firm’s new saleroom location at 710 Main Street South in Woodbury. According to owner/auctioneer Thomas Schwenke, “ . . . we have many new customers who have found us because of our new location, and our preview and sale attendance has grown with our new occupancy.”

Included among the 366 catalog lots are the furnishings of a Millbrook, New York estate which include a fine 18th century New York chippendale side chair, a group of decorated cupboards, many fine design and custom items, as well as a group of folk art portraits including a fine 19th century anonymous oil on board of a young lady. Also from that New York estate is a stunning and rare pair of 19th century French oak doors, 80" high, 23 3/4" wide, fitted with stained and painted leaded glass inserts of neoclassical floral design, signed "J. Vantillard, 6 Passage Stanilas, Paris". (est. $12,000-$18,000). Joseph H. Vantillard is known for decorative glass painting, working at various locations in and near Paris, France in the late 19th century.

Other New York estate consigned items include a rare Southern yellow pine architectural corner cupboard, which according to family tradition was removed from a South Carolina residence before being purchased by the current owner from a picker in North Carolina. Jewelry items include a fine Cartier 25 jewel watch and various gold, sterling silver and costume items.

A California estate yielded a group of period American and English furniture, including a fine George III carved mahogany corner chair and a Vermont cherrywood slant front desk. Items from an Illinois estate include a fine Kittinger swell front inlaid mahogany sideboard, and decorative furniture from a Florida estate includes a Chinese lacquer four panel folding screen and a fine Regency style bronze mounted satinwood writing desk.

Just received early last week is a Markneukirchen tiger maple violin, made in Germany circa 1920, labeled by Arno Erwin Hendel (est $1000-$1200), along with a silver mounted bow stamped Leon Pique (est $500-$700).

Among the late arrivals for the sale is a large vinyl pop art work by noted American artist Tom Wesselmann, (est $12,000-$18,000). The work, entitled “Nude Banner”, is an iconic example of the contemporary style of the artist, who is well-known for his large scale reclining nudes.

Other fine art in the sale include two oils on canvas by Janine Wesselmann - one “Gardens, Giverny” (est. $4000-$5000) and the other “Le Moude Feu” (est. $5,000-$6,000); a Rolph Scarlett abstract oil on paper (est. $300-$500); a Jane Frank “Rockscape II” (est. $2,000-$2,500); a Henk Bos (Dutch, 1901-1979) still life of table setting (est. $2,000-$3,000); and an H. Lloyd Weston, oil on canvas “Spring in New York” (est. $10,000-$12,000).

From a local Connecticut consignor is a Clare Leighton woodblock, “Tobacco 1952” (est $300-$400), which was one of twelve specially commissioned woodcuts for Wedgewood’s New England Industries series of plates, and the “Tobacco” woodcut represented the Connecticut industry of tobacco farming. It is in only fair condition, but is marked 17 of only 50 original cuts. From another Connecticut consignor is a Maxwell Parrish print “Daybreak” (est. $200-$300).

Preview times for the sale are Thursday, February 23rd noon to 5pm, Friday, February 24th 10am to 7pm, Saturday, February 25th 10am to 5pm, and Sunday, February 26th 8am to noon (sale time).
