Rare Pair Bronze Torcheres by Paul H. Manship Top Schwenke Auctioneers Fall Fine Estate Sale At $50,400

Posted October 8, 2014

Old Master Painting, Chinese Bronze Wine Vessel and Gilt Owl Weathervane Also Sold Well

Woodbury, CT – A rare pair of gilded bronze torcheres by noted sculptor Paul Howard Manship (American, 1885-1966), was the top selling lot at Schwenke Auctioneers Fall Fine Estates Auction held Sunday, October 5th in Woodbury, Connecticut. The torcheres had been made by Manship in France circa 1916 and subsequently were shipped to the United States in the 1960’s. The pair were 59" high and 12" wide, and depicted “Adam and Eve and Vulcan and Venus", with each shaft inscribed near base "Paul Manship 1916". They were accompanied by a letter from the Paul King Foundry, Johnston, Rhode Island, documenting the assembly and repair of the torcheres in 1965 under the direction of Manship. Provenance was given as Ex. Collection: Ms. Jeanne Bretillot, Paris, France and New York, NY. Ref: Christies NY, December 6, 1985, Lot 138; Metropolitan Museum of Art NY, Gift of Edward C. Moore, Jr., 1922. Lit: Rand, "Paul Manship", Smithsonian Pub., 1989, p.149, fig. 155. After several minutes of spirited competition among a bidder in the room and two phone bidders, the lot was finally knocked down by Auctioneer Tom Schwenke for $50,400 to an anonymous institutional phone bidder from New York City.

Second top lot of the sale was a framed old master painting from a local Southbury, Connecticut estate. The painting entitled "Mother and Child" was oil on canvas, 27 3/4" high, 22 1/4" wide, unsigned, but noted on verso "restored in 1932" and bore a label of Hannah Mee Horner, a restorer in Philadelphia. The work was mounted in an Arts & Crafts style frame monogrammed ELC verso. The painting was claimed by a phone bidder from Germany for $11,590. A second Old Master School painting, "Hen and Crock", oil on canvas, unsigned, with frame size 24 1/4" high, 30" wide, sold to an internet bidder from Australia for $1,952.

Furniture and folk art performed well in the sale, with an interesting and unusual American gilt copper full bodied owl weathervane, circa 1930, depicting two owls perched on a branch, fetching $5,400 from a phone bidder. The vane retained its apparently original gold leaf and was mounted with cast iron directionals. Dimensions were 21 1/2" high and 33 1/2" long.

This sale also featured Chinese decorative arts, with a very fine Chinese archaistic overlaid bronze ritual wine vessel (You) in the manner of the early Western Zhou dynasty topping the Chinese lots at $6,720 to a phone bidder from New York City. The lidded bronze vessel with 24K gold and silver overlay, was pear form cast with flanges on a flaring base and had a swing handle terminating in Qilin masks, the body boldly decorated with Taotie masks and bands of stylized dragons in relief, with hatched detail to underside of base. Dimension were 11" high (excluding handle), 8 1/2" wide, 6 1/4" deep. The Schwenke Auctioneers firm had sold a similar wine vessel in the Arts of Asia Auction held in March earlier this year. Chinese ritual bronzes were used in offerings of food and drink to ancestors in family temples, ceremonial halls or at ritual banquets in which living and deceased members participated. They were eventually buried with the owner so he could continue to pay his respects in the afterlife.

Another Chinese lot which sold well was a Chinese Dao Guang blue and white porcelain bowl on wood stand, circa 1825-1850, and measuring 2 1/2" high, 5 3/4" diameter. The bowl had been consigned by a New York collector and fetched $2,680 from a Live Auctioneers bidder from China.

Selling for $4,200 to a phone bidder was a rare Steuben glass America’s Cup sculpture by James Houston, 20th century, etched on base “Steuben 1/25 J. Houston”, in a presentation case with wood base, 7 1/8" high, 12" wide, 2 1/4" deep. The piece was consigned by the Long Island estate from Centre Island.

Many fine art lots were sold, with the top price of $2,560 realized by a pair of framed oils on canvas, attributed to S.J.E. Jones (English, active 1820-1855), depicting 'Pheasant Hunting' and 'Grouse Hunting,' unsigned, with frame size 23 3/4" high, 27 1/2" wide.

Another artwork from the Centre Island estate was by Tomaso De Simone ( Italian, active 1870-1900), and was 'An Admiralty Schooner of the White Squadron in the Bay of Naples' oil on canvas, signed and dated T.D. Simone 1869. That lot sold to an internet bidder for $2,680. One of a famous family of Neapolitan ship portraitists, Tomaso painted primarily in the Bay of Naples, often including Mt. Vesuvius. His work is often of British vessels. The lot had been exhibited at the National Maritime Museum, London and measured 27" high, 36" wide.

European and English period and decorative furniture fared well, with a pair of Italian neoclassical style marquetry commodes peaking at $8,750 to an internet bidder. The commodes featured a rectangular cross-banded top centering a floral medallion, over a case of two short over two long foliate marquetry drawers, and measured 44" wide, 17" deep, 33" high. A very stylish Spanish Colonial Baroque style dining table, with a thick rectangular top on carved and molded shaped trestle supports with scrolling iron braces. 29 1/4" high, 78 3/4" long, 39" deep, sold for $2,560 to a bidder present in the room.

Top silver lot of the sale was a Tiffany & Co. sterling silver oval handled engraved presentation tray from the Centre Island estate. The tray measured 17 5/8" high, 28 1/2" wide, and weighed 124.8 troy ounces. A phone bidder claimed the lot for $2,562.

Another top silver lot was a fine pair of Tiffany & Company sterling silver trays, 20th century, with elaborate gadrooned border, 16" long, 12 1/4" wide and 98.850 troy ounces, which sold for $2,440 to a trade bidder in the room.

Several estate oriental carpets were offered, including Persian and Caucasian room and scatter sized rugs, and other regional Asian rugs of varying sizes. Top rug lot of the sale was a fine room size Agra carpet with green floral field, salmon floral primary border, measuring 12' long, 9' wide, which sold to a phone bidder for $1,952.

Woodbury Auction’s next auction is scheduled for Sunday, December 7th at 11:00 am. The sale will feature American and European furniture and decorative arts, fine art, jewelry, oriental rugs, and designer fashion and jewelry from a prominent Upper East Side New York City estate. Absentee and phone bidding will be available for this live gallery auction, and the sale will be broadcast live on the internet.
